As soon as I was old enough and had a job, I began to travel – across the USA and to places I had dreamed about…England, France, Italy, Mexico, Bermuda, Morocco, Turkey and soon to be Ireland!). My family roots in Nova Scotia and yearly reunion road trips instilled a love of the beauty of northern New England, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI, Cape Breton ….. all things Maritime Canada…all things garden and ocean! I made new friends who came from around the world and wanted to know more about their cultures. My sister and family moved to the “opposite coast” in the 1970’s. Since that time not a year has gone by without a trip or two, and now, most winters in my favorite US state, sunny California! In addition to natural beauty, all of these new lands had one very important thing to draw me …. Unique art, antiques and handmade objects reflecting their varied histories and cultures. I was hooked on travel and collecting!
When my husband and I were vacationing in the west and northwest in the mid 1970’s, I became drawn to turquoise and other natural stones. Soon I was inspired to create unusual jewelry pieces using the stones, beads and focal pieces I had been collecting. That was the beginning…
I discovered a whole community of like-minded artists and artisans in the Victorian town of Melrose, MA., where we raised our sons. We often banded together for craft shows in my home. Today, Melrose is a destination for art lovers thanks to the Melrose Arts Association, Artisans Marketplace at the Victorian Fair, Art in the Park and most of all a wonderful artisan shop, Hourglass, where scores of talented artists now show their work. I have been proud to be a part of the Hourglass family for over almost fifteen years. Please visit their website! Other shops where Artful Indulgence jewelry can be found are also fabulous sources of all things unique, and handmade: noa Fine Jewelry & Gifts on Commonwealth Avenue, West Concord, MA; FACETSetc., 130A Hollis St., Groton, MA: Buddhamouse Emporium, Yale Avenue, Claremont, CA and the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation Gift Shop in Alta Loma, CA.. Visit them all on Facebook, check out their websites, best of all stop by in person, and tell them Deb from Artful Indulgence sent you!!
An old cross stitch my mother made , LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT, has become one of my favorite mantras. Follow your loves and your dreams... and your life will be nothing but interesting. .. Who would have imagined I would one day use my high school French to negotiate at flea markets in Nice, France or Marrakesh Morocco! Or to awaken in a tent in the Moroccan desert to ride a camel under starlight to the far off sand dunes and watch the sun come up in the East! Who would have imagined I would be living at the ocean as I always imagined and creating things I love!!
I am always experimenting with materials and techniques and am proud of the fact that I employ the same age-old techniques of tying, hammering, weaving, stringing that have been used for ages by all cultures in jewelry making. Whenever I can, I try to incorporate old or unusual objects or beads from my travels, from other times and different cultures. Tribal pieces are my favorites! It is a very pleasurable form of recycling.
I love knowing that despite outward differences we are all alike in our love of art and beauty and that we all dream and gaze at the same moon and stars in the night sky!
